I’ll be blunt – I’m not big on fashion. Don’t
get me wrong, I like clothes, but I’m not into
trends and the “latest” fashions.
I’m traditional about most things involving
taste – classics have passed the test of time
and are tough to improve on. I admire anybody
trying to improve on the classics, but I’m not a
fan of new styles just for the sake of being
different and especially not to prove that I’m
“hip” or “current”.
Of course I think that people should have their
own style, but once again I believe in
fundamentals and that form should follow
function. Within the confines of classic
clothing there is enough variety for people to
set their own style and yet have
appropriate/functional clothing for whatever
situation.
This year I’m excited about golf clothing. The
classic styles are back – finally – yet updated
with a lot of color. I think it’s great –
especially for spring and summer. Pastels are
back and so are brights.
I never understood the black craze – black
should be for formals and funerals. I know golf
can feel like a death march … but at least the
clothes should have a lighter spirit.
As far as the trend for athletic wear for golf –
I don’t get it. Golf isn’t a sport – it’s a
game. Save the lycra for bicycle races. Golf
athletic wear is just the latest version of the
polyester look of golf in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s.
People cry when they see themselves in old
pictures when they were wearing those ugly golf
fashions – this new golf athletic wear will
cause that same embarrassment in future years.
Not only is classic clothing good looking and
functional, but it is also well made. The
“latest” fashions are usually poorly made
because the emphasis is on catching a trend, not
on quality. Classic clothing manufacturers can
focus on improving quality such as using better
fabrics and dyes, and improving details such as
zippers and buttons.
Yes there is great classic golf clothing this
year – and it’s also back in fashion. So you can
have the best of both worlds: quality, timeless
clothing that’s updated in fun colors. Enjoy. |
