About Deer Run

DRGC is a public golf club with the charm of an old, private club … but without the stuffiness.

If you like pristine course conditions, Arboretum-type flowers and landscaping, a charming former farmhouse as the Clubhouse, an Irish Pub, an award-winning Golf Shop, the only automated Power Tee driving range in Minnesota, brand new electric EZ Go golf cars, and a fun-to-play golf course that winds through beautiful land with scenic elevation changes … you’ll (probably) like Deer Run.

We forgot to mention … and a 4 hour round of golf that feels relaxed and leisurely. Slow play is not accepted. However, golf should not be a racetrack. A 4 hour round is the norm at DRGC – no slower and no faster. We want every player to enjoy the game of golf.

Though we are very proud of our unique atmosphere and amenities … DRGC is about the game of golf … and hospitality. Our focus is to enhance your experience – not get in the way.

Our History

Everything is a reflection of its roots. Though DRGC is only 30 years old … the land it sits on was always a special place. Former Senator Henry McKnight lived in the Clubhouse (when it was a farmhouse). It wasn’t just a typical farm, it was a horse farm and actually had horse races on what is now the 18th fairway.

Though it wasn’t the Kentucky Derby … with a little imagination you can picture people sitting in the stands lining the fairway as they cheered on their favorite horse. People still love to sit on the patio and watch (sometimes cheer) golfers as they finish the 18th hole.

Deer Run GC was one of the first golf communities in Minnesota and opened for play in the Fall of 1989. However, 1990 was the first full season … so when you hear that our first year was 1989 and 1990 … both years are correct and probably not worth a fistfight.

Like many businesses and golf courses, we were pretty bare-bones in those early years. However, because of the gorgeous piece of property and the charm of the old farmhouse, golfers were impressed and made the “long” trek out to Victoria, MN.
We immediately developed strong Men’s and Ladies Leagues … which continue to this day.

And in 1997 we started FastPlayFriday which put us on the map and garnered national attention. The concept of enforcing a 4 hour round was revolutionary and changed our culture so that a 4 hour round became the norm … and still is over 20 years later.

We were the first public golf club to emphasize fast play and fun … two concepts that are finally taking hold throughout the golf world.

Recreational golf is not the same as tournament golf. They are both valid forms of golf. However, Deer Run GC is focused on providing an exceptional golf experience … one that is based on hospitality. We have won the Tee Times Magazine READERS CHOICE AWARD for Hospitality for the last 11 years in a row.

You can see by looking at those awards that we’ve come a long way since those early years. And Victoria is not “way out” anymore … sort of a suburb of Excelsior. But, we’ve never forgotten our roots. We are still the old farmhouse sitting on beautiful land … and a place where people want to come and relax and have fun.
