Advice

Greetings Golfers,

Want to share an email that I just received from Alan:

Tommy,

Played The Run yesterday AM (8:20a tee) and have a few concerns that I’m sure you want to hear:

  1. Couldn’t find the seat heater button in my cart. What gives??!!

  2. The course was in great shape EXCEPT for the 13 holes that I bogyed or worse.

  3. The yardages on the cart screens appear overstated as many of my incredibly reliable approach shots came up short.

  4. The front desk refused to sell me a bike pass for the cart paths. How do I get one? (BTW….Really appreciate the “Easy Access Point” you provide near the 12th tee box!!)

  5. Lost 5 new green Duo Softs due to the leaf accumulation near the OB stakes. How do I apply for replacements?

  6. I asked to speak with you about these concerns, but staff said you hadn’t shown up yet! Are you now part-time?

  7. The teenagers who appear to run the place seemed sufficiently competent so that upper management could easily be ‘thinned’ so that green fees could be reduced to compete with “bargain" courses.

  8. Had lunch there afterwards and was surprised to learn that it wasn’t included in the green fees!

Just thought you might like to know these concerns as I know you openly welcome criticism in your efforts to accommodate golfers like myself. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance in improving operations at The Run.

Always Assistive Alan

Obviously Alan is pretty hilarious.

Advice can be a tricky subject. Unsolicited face-to-face advice can be pretty disrespectful if it's not asked for.

However, a format such as a blog can be more of a discussion than a personal attack.

So … here’s where I’m going. I think the PGA Tour needs to go back to wooden woods and balata balls. The new equipment has totally changed the game and made classic courses obsolete.

What if Major League Baseball players used metal softball bats? The game would be ruined. Every ball park would become obsolete. Every former record would be obsolete. We couldn’t compare Mickey Mantle to modern stars.

But the big golf organizations insist that we all play the same game. We don’t play the same game. Not really. Have you ever played with a Tour player? It’s a different game.

So, the new rule about cutting back the distance on golf balls … is a misguided attempt to fix the problem. And the last thing that most players need is a shorter golf ball.

Amateur golfers need all the help they can get. Just like softball players.

But, PGA Tour players need to play the game that Hogan, Nicklaus, etc., played.

I enjoy watching the baseball playoffs. It’s still baseball.

Maybe I need Alan to send the USGA and PGA tour an email.

Cheers!
