Growing the Game

Growing the Game

Greetings Golfers,

Did you watch any of the US Open last week?

I didn’t watch any of it live … I only saw replays at night. The replays of the first two rounds were just mostly showing guys putting. That’s not why I want to watch a golf tournament.

Though it’s still early in the tournament … why not pick a good group and follow them? The announcers can set-up the challenges for the players, such as hole design and wind … and then we can actually watch great players deal with a major championship.

And … I’ve also been watching videos about the new model for the PGA Tour.

And … an interview with the guy who runs the Golf Channel and Golf Now.

The narrative is always about “growing the game." But are they?

It almost seems like farmers growing more food but destroying the land in the process.

Or are those actually farmers … or big food corporations who are doing that?

Obviously we all have to make money.

But when does it turn into just greed? More money at the expense of the innate value of something.

Is bigger always better? How about the saying “Less is more?”

Aren’t there natural sizes and limits to things?

I think we’ve become afraid or too lazy to try to get at the root of things. What makes something good? Or … what makes something bad?

Well … I know that I love watching great players play the game of golf. Putting out of context is not interesting.

If this keeps up … I’d rather play golf than watch a Major.

Playing golf is always the answer!

Cheers!
